Well this week has had it’s ups and downs with the fishing. Surf fishing in Duck has been fair at best with some small blues and croakers being caught in the wash. The pier at the Hilton, aka Kitty Hawk Pier has reported a good number of trout in the mornings. On Tuesday Ben Ethridge and family fished with us on the Hot Pursuit and caught a limit of blues in the inlet. The Miss JD with Capt. Clay fished the Wright Memorial Bridge on Wednesday and Thursday and did fairly good catching and releasing stripers. The Sea Robin fished offshore on Wednesday and had a good catch of tuna, dolphin, tilefish, seabass, and amberjack. The Miss Broad Creek fished Tuesday and Wednesday and reported slow fishing. The water temp at the Duck Pier is 55.4. There is a high tide at 11:48 am and a low tide at 5:47pm

Some North Carolina shrimpers have pulled in an unusual type of shrimp in addition to the common white, pink, or brown species in their trawl nets.

In 2006 and 2007, fishermen reported catching a few Asian black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), a species not native to South Atlantic waters.

“We don’t think the black tiger shrimp is established here, but we really don’t have much information. That’s why we’re asking fishermen to call us if they catch any of these shrimp,” said Trish Murphey at the NC Division of Marine Fisheries.

Black tiger shrimp, one of the world’s largest shrimp species, can grow to over one foot in length, although the ones captured in NC have been around 9 inches long.

Native to the West Pacific, the black tiger is also widely farmed, particularly in Southeast Asia.

The species is named for the distinct dark stripes that encircle its shell.

The first reported sighting of black tiger shrimp in NC was in October 2006 in Pamlico Sound, near Gull Rock in Hyde County. In 2007, fishermen reported catching tiger shrimp in the same vicinity, as well as offshore of Bogue Banks in Carteret County.

FINALLY, I can post a good fishing report. There were good catches of bluefish and trout in the surf, mostly taken on cut bait. Inshore boats caught bluefish trolling. And offshore fishing was fair with some tuna and dolphin caught. I got reports from down in Hatteras that they had a good day on cobias yesterday. This is great news, an early showing of cobias means we are going to smoke them this year. We had Scott Strebbler fish with us yesterday on the Sea Robin. He chartered the boat all to himself and it paid off. He got to catch his tuna, and he got a bonus limit of dolphin. We are now taking reservations for the Outer Banks Fishing Schools fishing seminar on May 24th. This seminar is going to cover fishing for cobia, kings, and amberjacks. Some of the topics covered will be, sight casting and chumming for cobia outside Oregon Inlet, live baiting and trolling for king mackerel, jigging for monster amberjack, trolling for blues and spanish mackerel, fishing the artificial reefs and Navy towers, net casting for live bait, the Shimano Butterfly Jig, sorting out modern fishing lines and what the pros use, knot tying and rigging workshop (bimini twist, spiderhitch, nail knot, blood knot, double-uni knot, dropper loops, snelling, and the no name knot). The seminar will run from 8:30am till 4:30pm at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk. The cost will be $125 per person. For more info give me a call at (252)255-BAIT

We ran a 1/2 day afternoon trip on the Sea Robin yesterday with Francis Collinson and his crowd. No blues, no bass, but there were lots and lots of dogsharks, better than 50 at the last count. Dogsharks are not a very prized game fish, but they are a lot of fun on light tackle when there is nothing else happening.

Surf fishing was slow yesterday in Duck. I was a prety day for fishing, but I did not get any good reports.

30mph winds will keep our boats to the dock today, and possibly tomorrow. Our whole fleet is booked Friday afternoon but we do have some openings in the morning, so if you want to go fishing on Friday you may want to book now before it is too late.

There is a high tide at 6:43am and a low tide at 1:00pm. The water temperature at the Duck Pier is 50.4.

Good Luck,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Well it sure has been a long winter but it is time to go back to work for all of us hear at Sharkys. I’ve been up hear at the store for about a week now getting things ready for the season putting up new stock, folding all the new tee shirts, and removing 4 1/2 months of dust on everything.

As far as the fishing right now I would call it a mixed bag. Surf fisherman are catching dog sharks, skates, croaker, puppy drum, and a scattered big bluefish. We ran a 1/2 day charter on friday with Wendel and Karen Lewis from Kentucky, and caught 12 big bluefish and all the dogsharks they could handle. Boats running offshore have been catching both bluefin and yellowfin tunas. The water temperature at the Duck Pier is 50.2. There is a low tide at 11:25am and a high tide at 5:24 pm.

Good Luck,

Chris at Sharkys
